Hillside Community Church, in partnership with Hungry For Life, has adopted the Kenyan village of Boro for a five to seven year community transformation project.

Boro Community Update

GRANT:

Canadian Development Agency Gives a $75,000 Matching Grant.  One of the most exciting developments in our Boro project is that we have received a 3 to 1 matching grant from the Canadian government for our project. This means that for every dollar we raise, up to $25,000, the Canadian government will provide $3, up to $75,000. So our $25,000 is multiplied to become $100,000. This kind of dollars can make a major difference in the lives and future of an entire community in Kenya. We continue to dream and work toward making a substantial, long term difference to the health and prosperity of this very needy district of Boro. Below are some details of this year’s project.

MEDICAL CLINIC PROJECT:

Boro is located in the Siaya District in the southwest part of Kenya. There are 75,000 people who live in the Boro region with the clinic catering to around 16,000 people. Currently the clinic is operated by 2 nurses & 2 subordinate staff; operating six days a week, handling an average of 500 patients a week. Transforming the Clinic: With less than adequate medical services for the local population, the goal is to work towards upgrading the clinic into a health centre, whereupon the government will provide a medical doctor, a lab technician, additional nurses, and prescription medication.

2009 Team Initiatives:

Last October, a team of ten went to Kenya for two weeks to help implement some initiatives. Their project goals included: Operating a mobile medical clinic (traveling to remote locations to provide medical care), completing the laboratory & medical clinic ward, distributing Malaria bed nets & running special events to provide some TLC to the children of the village.

2010 Health Initiative:

  • Malaria Treatment & Nets: Distribute anti-malarial medications 4 times a year and provide treated bed-nets for 1,300 children. Ninety percent (90%) of the world's malaria cases occur in Africa and children are greatly impacted. But malaria is both preventable & treatable
  • Vision Clinic & Eye Care: Provide community eye testing, providing eye glasses and medical treatments.
  • Mobile Clinic: Facilitating a large supply of medicines for local medical clinics. Host several day long special clinics in outlying areas with a goal to help 500 individuals.

2010 Primary Education Initiative:

  • Construction of 3 primary school classrooms.

2010 Clean Water Initiative:

  • Repair two bore hole water wells and dig seven new bore hole water wells.

2010 Church Construction Initiative:

  • The local Boro congregation, who are helping facilitate many of our relief and development operations, meets in a very small, decaying mud/dung constructed building with mud floors. A larger, steel constructed building with concrete flooring could be built for less thatn $9,000.

AROMA OF AFRICA FUNDRAISER NIGHT:

Our next Aroma of Africa will be held on November 20, 2010.
